Ransomare attacks keep increasing: Report
Earlier this week I wrote about the discovery of a new ransomware gang. Today NCC Group released its ransomware attack numbers for January, and they aren’t pretty.
Ransomware cases last month rose by three per cent from December, with 590 attacks — the largest number of attacks since NCC Group started collecting data in 2021;
Hackers breached Gravy Analytics, stealing 17TB of sensitive data . They shared samples on a cybercrime forum and threatened to release more if the company didn't respond;
INC Ransomware targeted Stark Aerospace, a U.S. defense contractor, claiming to have stolen 4TB of sensitive data, including UAV firmware, design plans, and employee information;
Industrials — which would include critical infrastructure — remain the most targeted sector, with 25 per cent of attacks;
72% of all attacks took place in North America and Europe.
As I’ve written before there’s lots of free advice on defending against ransomware from the national cybersecurity agencies. For example
—from the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency;
—from the Canadian Centre for Cyber Security;
—from the Center for Internet Security;
And if that’s not enough see the Ransomware Task Force’s Blueprint for Ransomware Defence.
